About the Journal

Open Phenomenology is a peer-reviewed journal for the study of phenomenal consciousness, the essence of subjective experience. Traditionally, the scientific investigation of consciousness has relied heavily on objective measures and third-person observations. While valuable, these approaches cannot fully capture the rich, qualitative nature of what it feels like to be conscious.

This journal prioritizes first-person accounts, recognizing the profound insights that can be gleaned from the careful and systematic examination of subjective states. We focus on the analysis of psychedelic experiences and other exotic states of consciousness, as these offer potent lenses for exploring the outer limits and inner workings of our phenomenal world. By illuminating the extraordinary range of potential experiences, we seek to uncover the underlying structures and dynamics of consciousness itself.

Open Phenomenology embraces a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach. We welcome submissions that offer nuanced descriptions of subjective experience alongside diverse theoretical frameworks and analytical interpretations. It is our belief that through the careful study and open dialogue surrounding the full spectrum of human experience, we can move closer to understanding the very nature of what makes us conscious beings.
